Title:4 more colleges drop testing for admissions
Date:2/24/20
URL:https://www.insidehighered.com/admissions/article/2020/02/24/four-more-colleges-drop-testing-requirements-admissions
Brief Description:4 colleges across the nation have dropped requirements for students to take standardized tests to be admitted into their colleges. These colleges are Bellarmine University, Clarkson College, Suffolk University, and the University of St. Thomas.  Only Clarkson and St.Thomas are going completely test-optional. Suffolk and Bellarmine have requirements that have to be met for students to be allowed to be exempt from tests. St. Thomas released a staying saying they believed standardized tests were not reflective of how well a student would perform in college and that how well you do is more based on your household income.
Keywords:College, Affordability
Future Implications: It is good that some colleges are encouraging lower-income students to attend and lowering the cost of attendance even it is just by the cost of a standardized test. At the end of the day going test-optional is a good step towards college affordability but these are only 4 colleges doing it, for it to be truly impactful more colleges are going to need to follow in their footsteps.

Title: Thinking About the Sanders Plan
Date:2/24/20
URL:https://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/confessions-community-college-dean/thinking-about-sanders-plan
Brief Description: Matt Reed, Dean of Brookdale Community College decided to examine Bernie Sander's plan for higher education since he is a viable presidential candidate. There are things he likes about a President Sanders Administration namely that the college's cost of healthcare would go to zero and enrollment may rise at his community college. However, he does not like the idea of having to have 75% of his teaching staff be full-time professors. For Brookdale to do that he would have to hire 100 new faculty on top of the cost of building new offices and hiring more HR and IT people.
Keywords: Bernie Sanders
Future Implications: Considering Bernie Sanders is a legitimate presidential candidate it is of great importance to keep an eye on his plans for higher education. The idea of forcing colleges to hire extra full-time professors may not be a good idea for college affordability because if tuition is not free at a college then students will be stuck with the bill of paying for these new professors. Even if college is tuition-free, then students may still be footed with the cost of these professors through other fees.

Title: Joe Biden: Here's why my student loan plan is better than Bernie's
Date 3/2/20
URL:https://www.forbes.com/sites/zackfriedman/2020/03/01/student-loans-joe-biden-bernie-sanders/#4e9be4b73189
Brief Description: Prior posts have discussed Bernie's plan for higher education but none have delved deeply into the plan of the other Democratic front runner Joe Biden. Biden's plan for higher education would cost $750 billion and would be financed by capping itemized deductions at 28% and eliminating the practice of the stepped-up tax basis. Biden would have 75% of payments for free community college come from the federal government and 25% would come from the states. Under a potential Biden Administration graduates making $25,000 or less would owe no payment on student loans and no interest would accrue. Those making above $25,000 would pay 5% of discretionary income towards federal student loans payments. Biden also supports the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program and allowing borrowers to discharge student loans into bankruptcy.
Keyword: College, Tuition
Future Implications: Joe Biden, especially after big wins on Super Tuesday, is considered a front-runner in the Democratic primary. Despite what opponents will say it seems like he has a lot to bring to the table when it comes to making college more affordable. If he were elected president these policies could actually be helpful to college students and prospective college students.
