Brief Description: Congress recently passed the CARES act which among other things provided $14 billion in grants to higher education institutions. 3/4th of the formula for grants to be given to schools is based on Pell Student Enrollment and the other 1/4 is based on non-Pell undergrad and graduate students. Studies show that $8.9 billion will go to public colleges and universities, $2.5 billion to private non-profits and $1.1 to private for-profits.
Keywords: College
Future Implications: Public Colleges will benefit the most from the CARES act. What they will do with the money is a mystery for now. It is also a mystery in which specific colleges will get what from the grants. But colleges could theoretically use the money to temporarily lower tuition for their students or maybe create a scholarship fund for needy students affected negatively by the coronavirus crisis. This could help keep enrollment steady if we return to normal in the coming months.
