Title:Senate rejects DeVos rule restricting debt relief for bilked students

Brief Description: In a 53 to 42 vote the Senate voted to oppose a rule from the US Department of Education that would restrict the ability of students who were scammed by colleges to seek debt relief from the federal government. President Trump has not said if he will veto the measure. A few Senate Republicans joined the Democrats after some veterans' groups declared they were opposed to the Devos rule.
Keywords: Betsy Devos
Future Implications: Considering President Trump himself ran a college that was accused of being a scam I do see him vetoing the senate's ruling. It is hard to picture the Senate Democrats overring the veto because they had the support of barely half the senators this time. They would have to get 13 more votes to override the veto. If the rule gets put in place then students who get scammed by colleges will have to metaphorically jump through hoops to get debt relief.

Brief Description: President Trump is considering pausing student loan repayments as part of his plan to fight the economic effects of the Coronavirus outbreak. Senate Democrats are pushing him to pause these payments for 6 months so as to allow it be a stimulus on the economy. There a lot of other variables at hand related to this plan including whether interest would be gained on those loans during the time in which it is paused.
Keywords:College, Trump
Future Implications: Ironically, this is a good plan for student debt repayment but it is not a good plan for stimulating economic growth. I am of the opinion that if you pause student debt payments for a few months, rather than spending most of that money on the economy, most of those people will save that money so that when they do eventually have to make those payments again they are in a better position to get out from under the crushing pain of student debt.
