Brief Description: The "summer melt" refers to the disparity between students who submit their deposit for college and students who actually attend those colleges. A high number of students will yearly pay their deposit but never attend the school. A poll of 1100 incoming college students revealed that 22% have already pushed back their college plans because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Another poll revealed that 87 percent of college admissions professionals expect that summer melt to be larger this summer than in previous summers.
Keyword: College
Future Implications: Short-term it appears that the COVID-19 pandemic will prevent a lot of college students from starting college normally. Whether it be because of health concerns, economic concerns, or just not wanting to be educated via laptop, plenty of prospective college students may not begin their college education until the crisis blows over.
