James Donohue Professor Hochfelder 3/28/20 AHIS 201 Article: For college students, it's also an employment crisis URL: https://www.forbes.com/sites/ryancraig/2020/03/27/for-college-students-its-also-an-employment-crisis/#345788396c64 Date:3/28/20 Brief Description: Due to college campuses across the nation closing down many students who are graduating this year are losing a lot of their professional development opportunities including job interviews on campus and job fairs. It is also expected that a lot of job offers will be rescinded because companies will not be able to afford any new workers. Keywords: College Future Implications: I am curious to see what the class of 2020 will do in response to the economic recession brought on by the Covid-19 crisis. I theorize that instead of entering the job market a lot of these students may attempt to continue their school as graduate students which could overwhelm demand of grad school and push out deserving students who had pl...

James Donohue Professor Hochfelder AHIS 201 3/25/20 Title:'I Just Don't Think We Have The Luxury To Have Dreams Anymore' Date:3/24/20 URL: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/24/opinion/coronavirus-recession-gen-z.html?searchResultPosition=2 Brief Description: The article is written by a junior at Yale University and reflects the angst of Gen Z who plans to enter the job market in the coming years. Internships are being cancelled, job interviews and start dates are being postponed, they will be entering a depressed job market in a few years. The author also talks about a friend who wants to be a writer but is considering working in a more stable field so they have economic security. Keywords: College Affordability Future Implications: Gen Z has been around for about two decades but has lived through earth-shattering events like 9/11, the great recession of 2008 and the coronavirus pandemic. Living through these events has to have altered their worldview. I believe that...

James Donohue Professor Hochfelder AHIS 201 3/15/20 Title: Can The President Waive Student Loan Interest? Date:3/15/20 URL: https://www.forbes.com/sites/markkantrowitz/2020/03/15/can-the-president-waive-student-loan-interest/#22e3dd0873e3 Brief Description: This article addresses the limitations of the President of the United States to address the student debt crisis. This article was prompted by President Trump's declaration that he has waived interest on student loans held by federal government agencies. However, it has been determined pursuant to laws that only Congress has the power to do this. For example, The Higher Education Act of 1965 mandates that interest be paid on unpaid principal balance. Keywords:Education Future Implications: This plan to cut down on interest rates even if its temporary would be good for the student debt crisis. The only problem would be getting legislation through congress. The Democratic House would probably support it but it may be hard...

James Donohue Professor Hochfelder AHIS 201 3/13/20 Title:Senate rejects DeVos rule restricting debt relief for bilked students Date:3/11/20 URL: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/11/us/politics/student-debt-relief-senate-devos.html?searchResultPosition=1 Brief Description: In a 53 to 42 vote the Senate voted to oppose a rule from the US Department of Education that would restrict the ability of students who were scammed by colleges to seek debt relief from the federal government. President Trump has not said if he will veto the measure. A few Senate Republicans joined the Democrats after some veterans' groups declared they were opposed to the Devos rule. Keywords: Betsy Devos Future Implications: Considering President Trump himself ran a college that was accused of being a scam I do see him vetoing the senate's ruling. It is hard to picture the Senate Democrats overring the veto because they had the support of barely half the senators this time. They would have to get ...

James Donohue Professor Hochfelder AHIS 201 3/7/20 Title: Bill would require colleges to outline course-related fees Date:3/4/20 URL: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/bill-would-require-colleges-to-outline-course-related-fees/2020/03/04/6cb5dcae-5e67-11ea-ac50-18701e14e06d_story.html Brief Description: A bill being proposed in the Maryland State Legislature would force universities and colleges in the Maryland state college system to inform college students about the associated costs of textbooks and other materials that are associated with the course in their course catalogs. This idea was proposed by the University of Maryland Student Government Association and proposed to House of Delegates Sponsor Vaughn Stewart. The bill would force colleges to list which courses have free digital materials on printed materials for students and provide low cost printed options for students as an alternative. Keywords: College, Fees Future Implications: This bill would have a small bu...

James Donohue Professor Hochfelder AHIS 201 3/4/20 Title:4 more colleges drop testing for admissions Date:2/24/20 URL: https://www.insidehighered.com/admissions/article/2020/02/24/four-more-colleges-drop-testing-requirements-admissions Brief Description:4 colleges across the nation have dropped requirements for students to take standardized tests to be admitted into their colleges. These colleges are Bellarmine University, Clarkson College, Suffolk University, and the University of St. Thomas. Only Clarkson and St.Thomas are going completely test-optional. Suffolk and Bellarmine have requirements that have to be met for students to be allowed to be exempt from tests. St. Thomas released a staying saying they believed standardized tests were not reflective of how well a student would perform in college and that how well you do is more based on your household income. Keywords:College, Affordability Future Implications: It is good that some colleges are encouraging lower-inco...
